PALMER TWP., Pa. — Developers behind a proposed self-service car wash secured preliminary approval for the project at the township supervisors' meeting Tuesday night.

The new Shammy Shine Car Wash location at 2620 Kingston Road is set to include six wash bays “designed to match the appearance and functionality” of an existing Shammy Shine at 2640 Kingston Road, effectively doubling the franchise’s footprint.

The Shammy Shine website claims it is “the premier car care provider in the Northeast,” with 16 locations across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The existing location features a 100-foot express tunnel, 16 free vacuums, and a “wide range of car wash services,” including an Unlimited Wash Club. The 2640 Kingston Road location will soon feature self-service and touchless automatic service, the Shammy Shine website states.

A legal representative for Shammy Shine Car Washes said the team had seen “a positive response from the planning commission, a relatively clean letter from the engineer, [and] a relatively clean response from staff.”

Two waivers were granted, one dealing with scaling figures on the plan itself — the developers requested a scale of 1 inch to 20 feet as opposed to the normal 1 inch to 50 feet — and permission to pay a fee in lieu of establishing recreation space.

According to township documents, the fee for the recreation space amounts to $5,225, along with a “voluntary request for traffic contributions [that] would be $33,000,” based on a rate of $1,000 per peak evening trip.

Palmer’s Planning Commission and staff previously agreed on recommending approval for the plan based on these terms.
