ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The first candidate for the Allentown mayoral race has been announced. Matthew Tuerk has thrown his hat in the ring for what could eventually be a crowded race in 2021.

Tuerk was most recently a vice president at the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Cooperation. His job was to help attract and keep businesses in Allentown. He says he left the role last week to pursue the democratic bid for mayor and bring a, quote, “fresh vision and voice to city hall.”

"I want to bring my experience into helping Allentown thrive," Tuerk said.

"Our city has a rich history, and the regional economy is strong, so let's bring it together and move towards an Allentown that's truly open for business, creating jobs, and bringing prosperity to every corner of a safe, clean and healthy city."

Tuerk says there will be more details coming, but he wants people to focus on the Nov. 3 election right now.

Allentown’s current mayor is Ray O’Connell, whose term ends in January 2022. He hasn’t said if he will seek reelection. Several other Allentown leaders, including city council members, have hinted at entering the race, but may not announce their bids until after the presidential election.
