Allentown zoning meeting over in a flash without quorum

More than a dozen people were prepared to speak for and against several proposals at Monday's zoning meeting, but there were only two officials present from the board.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Half a dozen Allentown residents came to City Hall on Monday night to voice their concerns about an upcoming project. But they’ll have to come back next month to do so after officials continued all three proposals on their agenda.

Just two Allentown Zoning Hearing Board members — chair Robert Knauer and alternate Trent Sear — were present at the meeting, meaning there was not a quorum.

Knauer said one member called out due to an “emergency” and no others were available on very short notice.


Scott Unger and Alan Salinger usually sit on the board with Knauer, while Stephen Davies, Joe Peterson and Sears sometimes fill in.

The zoning board was set to hear a proposal from AG Investments to build a four-unit dwelling at 1028-1032 S. Lumber St.

Six residents told zoning officials they objected to the project, but none of them, nor the developer, spoke at Monday’s meeting.

Those residents made it clear they’d be at the Oct. 16 meeting to speak against the project.

The board was also expected to debate Blackstone Structures’ request to demolish three buildings at 960-968 Hamilton St. for its Edison Lofts West project.

The developer is proposing a 12-story mixed-use complex with 189 apartments and two floors dedicated to educational uses. Allentown planning officials asked Blackstone earlier this month to scale down the project.

The agenda for Monday night’s meeting also included a proposal to use a portion of a Hanover Avenue property for a truck repair garage.
