William Allen’s first Black basketball coach is winning

The William Allen High School boys basketball team is undefeated so far this season thanks to the team led by Head Coach Darnell Braswell, the first Black coach in the team’s history.

Braswell graduated from Allen, a predominantly non-white school, in 2006.

He was a stand out athlete on the basketball team. He says Coach Doug Snyder was a big influence.

“Fifteen years ago you know, I walked these hallways as a senior. There's teachers that they've had that I've had. I've worn the same jersey and sat in the locker room, I've played in these gyms, you know. It's just something that's a connection,” Braswell says.

He hopes he can be a role model for black student-athletes.

“It's not just about being an athlete. You know, you can go to school and become anything you want to, be but it's going to take a lot of hard work and discipline,” he says.

Previously, Braswell was the assistant coach for the DeSales University basketball team.
