BETHLEHEM, Pa. - PBS39’s long-running “Scholastic Scrimmage” show has lost one of its biggest supporters.
Sally R. Campbell, a retired English teacher and longtime judge on the high school quiz show, died Feb. 7 at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill. She was 83.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, 2344 Center St.
Campbell was involved for years with “Scholastic Scrimmage,” which will mark 50 years on PBS39 this fall.
“Sally was an institution,” said Cate Reifsnyder, director of education at Lehigh Valley Public Media.
“Until recently, she wrote the questions for ‘Scrimmage.’ She was at every production. She was here for all of the show and trained other judges how to be judges.”

Campbell was a lifelong educator whose knowledge and kindness served her well in her role as a judge, Reifsnyder said. Three judges sit in on each taping of the quiz show and monitor the questions being asked and those answered by students.
“They have to call the shots, whether an answer is accepted or not,” Reifsnyder said.
“She was a vital part of our scrimmage production team. She contributed to the success of the program as a longtime judge. Her kindness and warm smile will be missed by us all.”
Campbell, of Bethlehem, taught in and chaired the English department at Liberty High School for many years until her retirement, according to her obituary.
She was a graduate of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and earned a master’s degree from Lehigh University.
She belonged to First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem and volunteered with the Bach Choir of Bethlehem for more than 25 years. She also was an avid dog lover and enjoyed gardening, her obituary said.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Carrieann (Peter) Scheetz of Whitehall; a stepson, Michael Molnar of Rodondo Beach, California; a sister, Marjorie Robert Guroff of Rockville, Maryland; a niece, nephew and great-nieces.
