Man arrested in New York in April shooting in South Bethlehem returned to face court

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — A suspected shooter who was on the run for a month before being apprehended in New York in April has been returned to Northampton County to face court, officials said Thursday.

Allen Jahmell Grimes, 18, of Bethlehem, charged in the Feb. 28 shooting of a woman in the 400 block of Cherokee Street in South Bethlehem, was extradited from New York City after being caught by U.S. Marshals.

A preliminary hearing on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and possessing instruments of crime.

Grimes faces charged of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and possessing instruments of crime.

He was arraigned before a district judge, who denied bail, according to a release from the Northampton County District Attorney's office.

A preliminary hearing on the charges is set for July 23.

Bethlehem Police said that after its Emergency Response Team searched Grimes's home in the 600 block of the same street that evening, it was reported he was at large.

Authorities said a man with the victim at the time of the shooting said he and Grimes knew one another and even had a prior conflict.

That day, the victim was reported to be in stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the neck.

No update was provided Thursday regarding the victim’s condition.
