ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Lehigh Valley residents will soon have the opportunity to have smoke detectors installed in their homes for free.
After a two-year break, the American Red Cross Sound the Alarm—Save a Life event is back. The organization is asking community volunteers and firefighters to come together and help out at-risk neighborhoods.
Allentown’s event will begin April 30.
Peter Brown, executive director of the Pennsylvania Rivers Red Cross chapter in Allentown, is looking forward to a robust response.
“We're hoping that day across the Commonwealth to install at least 2,500 alarms and hopefully talk with at least 1,000 households and help them be safer in the event of a home fire,” Brown said.
Anyone can volunteer, Brown said, and people who are bilingual are especially in demand.
Participants will spend the day training, then head out to homes of those who have made an appointment.

The campaign will run from April 30 through May 22 across the Lehigh Valley.
