EAST PENN TWP., CARBON COUNTY, Pa.— If you wanted to take your dog for a walk along the D&L Trail in Carbon County, you're out of luck.

As of 2:20 p.m. Monday, engineers and construction crews were assessing damage caused by a large sinkhole that opened up along the D&L Trail between the East Penn Township Dog Park and the entrance to the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. (The mile markers are 94.2 and 97.13.)

According to a Facebook post by both East Penn Township and the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, "The purpose of this closure is for PUBLIC SAFETY. Trail users should turn around at the closure and NOT attempt to get by it."

They also urged users to re-share the post to increase awareness.

According to the Pennsylvania DEP website, sinkholes occur when the "lowering of groundwater levels cause a loss of support for the soft material in the rock spaces that can lead to collapse."

This post will be updated.
