HARRISBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania officials on Tuesday announced a mask mandate for students and teachers in schools Pre-K to 12 and for licensed childcare providers.
“Science has shown us that masking in school buildings is the best way to keep students in the classroom this year. That’s why today I’m issuing an order requiring universal face coverings,” said Alison Beam, acting secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
This announcement comes as the state has seen an increase in positive tests and hospitalizations for children due to COVID-19.
Gov. Tom Wolf, also at the press conference, reinforced the decision made by the health department.
“We need to put politics aside. We need to get back to what matters. Keeping students safe and keeping students in the classroom,” Wolf said.
Just last week, GOP leaders rejected the governor’s call for a mask mandate in the schools.
The mandate will begin Sept. 7.
