NAZARETH, Pa. - Masks are now optional in the Nazareth Area School District.

On Nov. 23, the school board approved a plan that removes the mask mandate for students and staff.

While Pennsylvania’s school masking order is still being litigated in state courts and a ruling overturning the order has been issued, Nazareth’s schools are moving forward without a mask requirement.

At the board’s in-person meeting, several people who commented publicly supported removing the mandate.

A person who participated by Zoom and identified herself as Marci Levine said she disagreed with changing the policy.

“I think it’s detrimental,” said Levine. “We don’t have the kids vaccinated enough yet to warrant such a maneuver.”

According to district officials, masks will still be required on district transportation, such as school buses.
