Pennsylvania sees its largest one-day increase in new COVID-19 cases since spring

As the delta variant sweeps through, Pennsylvania reported more than 3,400 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, an increase of nearly 50% in one day and the biggest spike since May.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - As the delta variant sweeps through, Pennsylvania reported more than 3,400 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, an increase of nearly 50% in one day and the biggest spike since May.

Northampton and Lehigh counties also saw a jump in new cases with 237 reported Thursday.

Both counties have seen new cases increase by a third over the past week.

The Lehigh Valley and the entire Eastern portion of the state are ranked as having “high” transmission of the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Hospitalizations across the state are also on the rise. According to the state’s tracking dashboard about 80% of Pennsylvania's existing ICU beds are full.
