Easton mayoral primary debate set for May 8 at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. — Easton City Council member Peter Melan and Mayor Sal Panto Jr. will come together at Lafayette College for an audience-driven debate next week.

According to a Lafayette news release, the debate will be from 7-8:30 p.m. in the school’s Colton Chapel, where the candidates will address vital issues facing Easton.

Melan and Panto are running in the May 16 Democratic primary election. No Republican has filed for a mayoral candidacy in the primary.

  • The audience can submit questions ahead of time or during the debate
  • Lafayette's Professor John Kincaid will moderate the event

Members of the public will be able to post questions they would like addressed by the candidates by filling out a Google Docs form. Audience members also can submit questions at the debate.

Professor John Kincaid, director of the Robert B. and Helen S. Meyner Center for the Study of State and Local Government at Lafayette, will moderate the debate.

It will be held by the Meyner Center and the Landis Center for Community Engagement, Lafayette Votes and Lafayette College Democrats.

Panto was Easton's mayor from 1984 through 1992, and returned to the office in 2008 to start four consecutive terms.

Melan has been an at-large councilman for the city since 2016.

Parking will be available at the parking deck behind the Markle Hall administration building on High Street.
