BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The state Education Department has awarded more than over $33 million to 12 community colleges throughout the state, including two in the Lehigh Valley.
Northampton Community College got $2 million for campuswide roof and paving and Lehigh Carbon Community College $625,000 for improvements to its public safety system, according to a news release.
Only two other colleges got an award larger than NCC; Reading Area Community College, with a $6.5 million, and Delaware County Community College, withe $10 million.
The awards should aid in funding "debt service projects, capital leases and cash capital projects," according to the release.
State Education Secretary Khalid N. Mumin said the grants will help colleges "better serve learners on their campuses," through updates and improvements.
Eligible projects included new facilities to adapt to growing populations, major repairs and "critical deferred maintenance," renovations and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance projects.
“Investments like this, combined with a focus on access and affordability, will have a real impact on learners both today and in the years to come," Mumin said in the release.
