ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Police killed an Allentown man who shot at them early Monday morning, according to the city’s police department and Lehigh County Coroner's Office.
Police responded about 3:40 a.m. Monday to the area of Sixth and Turner streets, where callers reported a man was “waving a firearm,” Assistant Chief Michael Becker said in a news release.
The man — identified by the coroner as 27-year-old Dominick Hogans —
pulled out a gun and fired at police as he ran away, Becker said.
Officers shot Hogans and then tried life-saving measures; EMS workers took him to a local hospital, where he died, Becker said. Coroner Daniel Buglio said he plans to release more information after an autopsy is completed on Hogans.
Allentown police are investigating the fatal shooting with several Lehigh County agencies, including the district attorney’s office, homicide task force and coroner’s office, Becker said.
The third officer-involved shooting this year
Monday's shooting marked the third officer-involved shooting in the city this year.
Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin announced March 2 a city police officer was justified for fatally shooting a gunman during a foot chase in February.
Officer Zane Struss was acting to protect himself and members of the community when he exchanged fire with Xavier Arnold on Feb. 10, Martin said. Arnold, 20, had allegedly assaulted another man and refused orders to drop his handgun moments before his death.
On June 16, a Pennsylvania State Police trooper shot at a motorist during a traffic stop in the city while working with the Allentown Police Department.
It was later revealed the motorist, 47-year-old Paris Bartlett, of Allentown, was not struck by gunfire.
Bartlett faces 24 counts related to the incident, including five felonies.
The shooting occurred near South Third and West Union streets, according to state police.
Bartlett allegedly used the car he operated, a Ford Fusion, to charge at a trooper as the trooper approached with his firearm drawn during a traffic stop.
The car came within a few inches of the trooper, then swerved over the curb and onto a sidewalk, according to state police.
