HARRISBURG, Pa. - Nearly 9 million voters have registered so far to cast their ballots in November, in person and by mail. But Pennsylvania officials say they’re still concerned about getting every vote counted on Election Day. WLVR’s Hayden Mitman reports on the latest update from the state.
Pennsylvania has received nearly 2.4 million applications for mail-in ballots so far.
Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar says the most pressing concern is making sure there’s enough time to count them.
“We need the legislators to pass a law to allow counties to start processing mail-ins and absentee ballots sooner. That’s our main need right now.”
Under current state law, counties have to wait until 7 a.m. on Election Day to begin counting ballots. Boockvar and Governor Tom Wolf want lawmakers to change that - and let local officials start counting next week.
Short of that, Boockvar says any additional time could help.
Pennsylvania voters have until Oct. 19 to register to vote.
