BETHLEHEM, Pa. — A stretch of the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike once again will be temporarily closed this weekend.

The highway will be closed Sunday morning to motorists traveling southbound in Lehigh and Bucks Counties because of a bridge replacement project, a release said.

The closure will allow for beams to be safely erected as part of the replacement of bridge NB-349 (Tilghman Street), with the Northeast Extension scheduled to be closed to traffic from midnight to 6 a.m. Sunday between the Lehigh Valley (Exit 56) and Quakertown (Exit 44) interchanges.

The following suggested detour will be in place, according to the release:

• U.S. Route 22 East, 0.5 miles

• PA Route 309 South, 2.0 miles

• Interstate 78 East, 6.2 miles

• PA Route 309 South, 9.2 miles

• PA Route 663 South, 3.2 miles

• Re-enter at Quakertown Interchange #44

Northbound traffic will not be impacted, the release said.

State police and Turnpike personnel will be positioned to assist drivers. Digital message signs also will provide information on the closure.

Work is contingent upon weather conditions, according to the release.

Motorists are encouraged to use the 511PA Smartphone App for real-time, hands-free PA traffic advisories, or dial 511 for local travel information.

The closure comes after the highway was closed for bridge work in early September between the Pocono (Exit 95) and Wyoming Valley (Exit 115) interchanges.
